Elsener invented the Offiziermesser – the “Officer’s Knife”. These knives were the Swiss

action and wanted some for themselves! Understandably, they couldn’t
pronounce “Offiziermesser”…so the Americans simply referred to them as
“Swiss Army Knives”.
